This page, like the others, is a work in progress and also a labor of love.  If I have left anyone out, please e-mail me and let me know.  This page is dedicated those brave soldiers who went above and beyond the call of duty and were awarded the Medal of Honor.  It is limited to those born in Fairfield County, Ohio, but I hope to make it an all Ohio page in the future.

Civil War Medal of Honor

CPL Daniel Allen Dorsey, 33rd Ohio OVI, Company "H", was born in Lancaster, Ohio 31 December 1838. He enlisted as a Private in the Union Army 18 September 1861at the age of 22.   Private Dorsey was promoted to Full Corporal 1 November 1861 and pomoted to Full Lieutenant 2nd Class on 2 March 1863. He was  awarded the medal of honor 12 April 1862 at Big Shanty, Ga. when nineteen of twenty-two men (including two civilians) who, by direction of General Mitchell (or Buell), penetrated nearly 200 miles south into the enemy's territory and captured a railroad train at Big Shanty, Ga., in an attempt to destroy the bridges and track between Chattanooga and Atlanta. Lieutenant Dorsey was given a disability discharge 24 August 1864. He married a woman named Anna and went on to have four children : Jessie, Edwin, Mable,  and Clarance.  He worked as a Laborer.  He later died in Levanworth Kanasa 10 May 1918.

PVT George S. Myers, 101st OVI, Company "F",  was born in Fairfield County, Ohio26 January 1843.  He enlisted as a Private 7 August 1862 at the age of 19..  He was promoted to Full Corporal on 7 July 1864 and promoted to Full Sergeant 1 May 1865.  He mustered out with the 101st  12 June 1865 from Camp Harker, TN.  He was awarded the Medal of Honor because he "Saved the regimental colors by greatest personal devotion and bravery at Chickamunga 19 Sept 1863"  Mr Myers was presented the Medal of Honor on 9 April 1894.  Sgt Myers died 21 August 1917.

PVT Jacob Parrott, 33rd OVI, Company "K", was born in Fairfield County, Ohio 17 July 1843. He enlisted as a Private  18 November 1861 at the age of 19.  He enlisted in Company K, 33rd Infantry on that date.  He was Promoted to Full Lieutenant 2nd Class on 24 April 1863.   He mustered out 3 Jamuary 1865. LT Parrott was awarded the Medal of Honor 12 April 1862 at Big Shanty, Ga. when nineteen of twenty-two men (including two civilians) who, by direction of General Mitchell (or Buell), penetrated nearly 200 miles south into the enemy's territory and captured a railroad train at Big Shanty, Ga., in an attempt to destroy the bridges and track between Chattanooga and Atlanta. Mr Parrott was awarded the Medal of Honor  25 March 1863.

PVT Joseph R. Prentice, 19th US Infantry, Company " E", was born in Lancaster, Ohio and awarded the Medal of Honor 31 Dec. 1862 for his actions at Stones River, TN  when he "voluntarily rescued the body of his commanding officer, who had fallen mortally wounded."  Mr Prentice was presented the Medal of Honor 3 Feb. 1894.
